Storm Boy made his highly anticipated debut for trainer Aidan O’Brien in the Group 2 Greenlands Stakes at The Curragh in Ireland but failed to fire in his first European appearance.
Partnered by top jockey Ryan Moore, Storm Boy was sent out a $2.45 favourite with swiftbet but disappointed punters by finishing at the tail of the field. The performance marked a stark contrast from his impressive form in Australia, where he was previously trained by Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott.
The Group 2 sprint was taken out by $23 outsider James Delight, representing the Clive Cox stable, with Oisin Murphy guiding the gelding to victory.
Before his transfer to Ireland, Storm Boy had built a strong reputation Down Under, notching up five wins from 10 starts and capturing races including the Magic Millions 2YO Classic, the Skyline Stakes, and the San Domenico Stakes.
With this latest run in Ireland raising questions about his form in the Northern Hemisphere, all eyes will now be on how the former Australian star bounces back in future targets, including a potential tilt at Royal Ascot.
