The Victorian racing world is in mourning following the passing of former jockey Bernadette Payne.
Racing Victoria confirmed her death on Tuesday on behalf of the Payne family, which includes Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle Payne and trainer Patrick Payne.
“It is with deep sadness that we confirm that Bernadette has passed away,” the Payne family’s statement read.
“She had a very difficult and challenging time in recent years and we find solace in the hope that she is now at peace.”
“She was loved by many throughout her life.”
“We ask that our family’s privacy is respected at this time. Thank you.”
Bernadette, 51, was one of eight children of Ballarat trainer Paddy Payne to become a jockey, riding nearly 200 winners before retiring in 2009.
Her sister, Brigid, also passed away prematurely in 2007 at the age of 36.
The Payne family’s resilience has been a testament to their strength, with Michelle reflecting on their upbringing after their mother’s sudden passing.
Funeral details for Ms Payne are expected to be confirmed soon.
