Treasurethe Moment’s path towards the Cox Plate is uncertain after the mare suffered a colic attack, with connections weighing up her spring options.
Yulong Chief Operating Officer Sam Fairgray told The Verdict podcast that her immediate wellbeing is the main focus, and trainer Matt Laurie will ultimately decide whether the Cox Plate remains on the agenda. “That’s obviously going to be down to Matt,” Fairgray said. “She is a four-year-old mare with plenty of options. Obviously with Via (Sistina) already Cox Plate bound, it’s not a necessity to have her heading that way. We’ll just see how she comes through the next few days and Matt can make that call.”
If Treasurethe Moment does not continue on a Cox Plate path, she is eligible for the $10 million Golden Eagle (1500m) on November 1, or she could target Group 1 races on the final day of the Flemington carnival, including the Champions Mile and Champions Stakes.
Meanwhile, stablemate Angel Capital is firmly on the rise after his emphatic return in the Chautauqua Stakes at Moonee Valley. Now raced by Yulong under the care of Chris Waller, the four-year-old is being aimed at top-level sprints later this spring. “It’s probably going to come down to where we draw,” Fairgray said. “He’s come through the race well and looks to be an exciting horse for the spring.”
Angel Capital is expected to be nominated for the Group 1 Rupert Clarke Stakes (1400m) on September 20 and the Group 1 Manikato Stakes (1200m) on September 26, and like Treasurethe Moment, he is also eligible for the Golden Eagle.
