Chris Waller-trained four-year-old Toomuchtobear has put his hand up for a spring campaign after a dominant win at Newcastle on Wednesday.
Chris Waller may have unearthed another spring contender with the lightly raced Toomuchtobear winning the Sky Racing Handicap (1500m) at Newcastle on Wednesday.
The four-year-old had only four starts to his name entering Wednesday’s race, which was his first start heading in the clockwise direction.
The son of Press Statement had been freshened since his last start maiden win at Bendigo and made it two wins in-a-row with a strong 2.22 length victory.
Stable representative Charlie Duckworth said the four-year-old is in for an interesting spring campaign.
“He’s obviously a very exciting horse moving forward,” he said.
“At the moment it’s hard to put a limit and a roof on this guy, but he’s ticking every box.
“It’s a massive advantage if you’ve got a horse than can go Sydney way and Melbourne way, it makes you versatile through the carnivals.
“He looked a little bit raw and vulnerable at the 300m, he was rolling around and that’s what we were concerned about going Sydney way for the first time.
“He finally knuckled down and put up a decent margin on them.
“How far he’s going to get, I’m not quite sure, but we’ll map out an interesting spring.”
Toomuchtobear jumped well from barrier six and settled on the pace under the guidance of Lee Magorrian.
He travelled well into the straight, before unleashing a devastating turn of foot to put his rivals away and win in impressive fashion.
It took the four-year-old’s record to two wins from his five-start career.
Magorrian said Toomuchtobear has a bright future ahead of him.
“He’s a very nice animal,” he said.
“I think this horse has got a bright future.
“Especially coming down for the carnival, I think (Chris) Waller will place him well and probably knock off a few nice races.
“He’s probably only going to get better with age, he’s going to be a lovely horse.
“I’m looking forward to seeing his future.”
Whilst the stable are confident heading into the spring, Toomuchtobear is currently not featured in any futures markets on TAB.com.au.
