A star was well and truly born at Randwick, while some quality horse flesh was on display in kicking off their Spring prep. All that and more in this weeks edition of ‘The Good, The Bad and The Ugly’.

Libertini…Wow
The post race experts were ready to fire off their tweets about Libertini but they’ll have to save them for another couple of weeks, perhaps longer, as the Anthony Cummings trained filly made an absolute mess of her rivals in the Silver Shadow Stakes (1200m) at Randwick on Saturday, smashing the class record of Houtzen and getting within a couple of lengths of Santa Ana Lane’s track record. She’s now in consideration for a slot in the Everest and off the back of that win, hard to argue.
True Detective Wins On Protest
He didn’t savage or even attack the line, but True Detective still managed to get the win in the Up And Coming (1300m) via the Stewards Room, firing in a successful protest against Superium, who gave it a bump when wanting to drift out under pressure. It’ll be 50/50 no matter who you talk to re the result of the protest. But Chris Waller has said that True Detective won’t head to the Golden Rose whereas Superium is likely to head there. He is a good horse, but doing a bit wrong.
Samadoubt…Really?
On form, compared to the rest, you couldn’t possibly entertain Samadoubt to be a Group l winner, but the trial win was enormous, he was ready to go and thanks to a lovely front running steer from Tim Clark, the Bjorn Baker trained galloper kicked strongly in front and was much too good for his more fancied rivals in winning the Winx Stakes (1400m).
PERFORMANCE OF THE WEEK:
Captain Obvious with Libertini, but she was just simply stunning. Her late splits were that of a high class animal and she made some good fillies look ordinary with her turn of foot. Where she heads to remains to be seen, but whatever she contests, she’ll just about be winning, and can easily measure up in an Everest should she get one of the remaining free slots.
DEBUT OF THE WEEK:
Hard not to be impressed by the debut win of Yao Dash at Canterbury. He looked to not handle the tight track at all but when he balanced up in the straight, gee he lengthened and gapped his rivals. Did he beat much? Probably not, but he ran time despite doing a bit wrong and he could well be a horse to be watched closely heading towards the Golden Rose.
RIDE OF THE WEEK:
He’s fast becoming the best front running rider in Australia is Tim Clark and Exhibit A there on Samadoubt in the Winx Stakes. Stuff the handbrake walk/crawl set up. If a horse can produce sustained speed, let it roll and that’s what Clark did on the bolter and he was there to be run down. Just kicked too strongly and ran sizzling time. Credit to the horse, but the ride was a beauty.
