After 10 starts that had netted five minor placings, Who Runs The World has finally broken through for Tony and Calvin McEvoy.
Calvin McEvoy cannot believe it took until start 11 for Who Runs The World to breakthrough for her maiden victory.
The three-year-old daughter Zoustar had shown McEvoy and his father Tony enough on the training track to convince them she had ability.
But after a debut back in December 2019, it took under Wednesday for Who Runs The World to record a victory in the Whitford Liquid Waste Maiden Plate (1000m) at Ballarat.
Heavily supported to run the $2.20 favourite under Luke Currie, Who Runs The World raced to a 3-½ length win from Write To Rossa ($20) with Winter Pinter ($2.50) three-quarters-of-a-length away third.
Lucky for the McEvoys, they have patient owners.
“The owners have been so patient,” Calvin McEvoy told racing.com.
“If someone had told us she would be a 10-start maiden, I just wouldn’t have believed them.
“She had galloped so well at home but it has taken us some time to work her out and we ran her over 1200 (metres) but she didn’t quite run the trip.
“So, we decided to send her here to Ballarat. We’ve done some schooling with her and she’s really responded well and her work on Saturday was really good.
“We came here really confident.”
With that confidence boosting win under the belt, McEvoy hopes that may start a string of wins.
“If she brought her gallops to the races, we thought she could win 10 races,” McEvoy said.
“Anyway, I hope it gives her the confidence she needs. She presented beautifully in the yard today, so well done to the team.”
