Tawny Port boosts Melbourne Cup 2026 credentials with Kentucky win

American stayer Tawny Port has strengthened his credentials for a potential Melbourne Cup campaign with an impressive victory at Kentucky Downs on Thursday morning (AEST).

The Miguel Clement-trained eight-year-old claimed the Bowling Green Gold Cup Invitational Stakes over 3300m, adding further substance to his staying form ahead of a possible trip to Australia.

Sent out as a $2.20 chance with Sportsbet, Tawny Port settled around midfield under Flavien Prat before producing a powerful run along the inside section of the track to score by three-quarters of a length.

The result represented an improvement on his performance in the same race last year, when he finished runner-up behind German stayer Flatten The Curve.

That form subsequently received an Australian reference when Flatten The Curve travelled to Melbourne and finished midfield in last year’s Melbourne Cup.

Tawny Port has already secured his pathway into this year’s Melbourne Cup after earning a golden ticket with victory in the Group 2 Belmont Gold Cup at Saratoga in June.

The entire holds a nomination for the $10 million Flemington feature and was rated a $51 chance with Aussie betting sites at the time of writing.

Should connections elect to make the trip, Tawny Port would become just the second American-trained horse to contest the Melbourne Cup 2026.

Parchment Party became the first in 2025, finishing 20th in the race.
