A stud career for Cox Plate winner Sir Dragonet is nearing although trainer Ciaron Maher will look to add a couple more Group Ones to his CV first.
The initial plan for Sir Dragonet was to take the star stayer to Hong Kong for their International carnival in December but with quarantine issues that is now becoming increasingly unlikely with the horses post raicng value already secured thanks to his Cox Plate win.
“He won’t go for a lengthy spell. Now he is a Group 1 weight-for-age winner he does have a value at stud so that may be an option for him come June July next year,” Maher said whilst speaking during the on the Mic podcast.
“Hong Kong is still on agenda. I put him in there just in case,” he said.
“I am probably leaning toward not going but it is there as an option.”
The most likely path with Sir Dragonet is to target the horse at Australia’s autumn G1’s with the Australian Cup and the Queen Elizabeth Stakes at the top of the list before a career at stud.
“He will have a couple of easy weeks. He will stay in work ticking over, he will go to Australian Cup, Queen Elizabeth and you never know, he may be looking to get some back underneath him (breeding career) after that,” Maher said.
