Ok, one week closer to the big Gr 1 $3million Golden Slipper over 1200m for juveniles, and we add another potential star to the list.
Today, at Randwick, over 1000m, newcomer STAY INSIDE (Extreme Choice-Nothin Leica Storm) gapped them to win easily, impressively and by a widening near 3 lengths.
And there was some kind of excitement about the run. Not just because it was 33 degrees, he was on debut, and was up against some future stars, but because he exploded when given his head.
Just prior to the race, Perfect Darling was a late scratching at the gates.
With ASHEMA (I Am Invincible-Omniscient) the heavily backed favourite caught and forced to race three wide all the way, her run to wind up 3rd was excellent. She made a move as the straightened and looked a big chance, but even she was caught by surprise when Stay inside accelerated.
“Good debut,” smiled co-trainer Michael Freedman. “He definitely has learned a lot from his trials. I wanted today to be 1100m, but in the end it didn’t matter because Robbie gave him a perfect ride and I loved the way he quickened up.
“I do think he has a bit of a future,” added Freedman.
Second home was the on debut filly from Chris Waller’s stable named HEADLINER.
“Always had a decent opinion of him and he just keeps improving. So we will aim a bit higher with him,” said Michael Freedman.
As was the run of the on debut filly HEADLINER (Star Turn-Sanaya) and if the winner and third home are headed towards Black Type glory down the track, which they both appear to be, this filly may be better than both later on.
She was slow to begin and settled last. Then in the heat, and new to the game, she threaded her way through the field before really savaging the line late.
She has Gr 1 Sires’ Produce Stakes over 1400m written all over her.
Especially as they ran a quick 56.89sec, meaning her final sectionals on debut were stunning.
But she didn’t win and the one who did looks very, very talented.
“When I asked him for an effort at the top of the straight he gave me an electric turn of foot so he has a career ahead of him,” claims his rider Robbie Dolan.
As do the pair chasing him.
Stay Inside has shortened from $101 into $26 for both the Blue Diamond Stakes and the Golden Slipper following his win.
