A capacity field of 16 sprinters has been confirmed for Saturday’s $1 million Group 1 The Goodwood (1200m) at Morphettville, setting the stage for a highly competitive finale to Adelaide’s Group 1 season.
Rey Magnerio will headline the field after drawing barrier five, with the Melbourne-based sprinter looking to break through for a long-awaited maiden Group 1 victory.
Trained by Robbie Griffiths, the gelding comes off a strong second placing in the $5 million Quokka at Ascot and will be partnered by champion jockey Willie Pike.
Emerging three-year-old filly Extragalactic shapes as a major danger after drawing barrier six and will carry the minimum weight of 50kg.
She impressed with a powerful finishing second in the Group 2 Tobin Bronze Stakes, and is expected to be highly competitive stepping up to elite level.
Tycoon Star, who defeated Extragalactic in that lead-up race, faces a tougher assignment after drawing the widest gate in barrier 16.
Other key contenders include Grand Larceny (barrier 14), WA mare Super Smink (13), local hope Watchme Win (12) and Sydney visitor Flying For Fun (10).
Inside draws have favoured Meridius (barrier one) and Desert Lightning (barrier four), both of whom are expected to secure economical runs in transit.
With a deep field and strong interstate representation, Saturday’s feature promises to be one of the most competitive editions of The Goodwood in recent years.
