Fresh from her stunning victory in the Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap, Spicy Martini is being aimed at Australia’s richest race, the $20 million The Everest.
Gold Coast trainer Toby Edmonds confirmed on Sunday that the brilliant mare will bypass the Group 1 Tattersall’s Tiara later this month and instead be freshened with a spring campaign in mind.
The centrepiece of that campaign is expected to be a bid for a slot in The Everest at Royal Randwick in October.
Edmonds said he takes inspiration from veteran trainer Les Bridge, who prepared Classique Legend to win The Everest in 2020.
“Les Bridge is into his eighties and he’s still training well and training Everest winners,” Edmonds told Radio TAB’s Past The Post.
“Hopefully this mare might attract an Everest slot, we’ll see what happens.”
The lofty ambition appears well within reach after Spicy Martini’s dominant performance in the Stradbroke, where she claimed Queensland’s premier handicap and banked the winner’s share of the $3 million purse.
The victory lifted her career earnings to approximately $2.7 million and further enhanced her profile as one of Australia’s emerging sprint stars.
Her success has also dramatically increased her value as a future broodmare.
In a decision that now looks inspired, connections withdrew Spicy Martini from last month’s Inglis Chairman’s Sale, where she had been scheduled to go under the hammer.
Purchased for just $8,000, the mare has become one of the great bargain stories in Australian racing and her value has soared following Saturday’s Group 1 breakthrough.
Should she secure an Everest slot, Spicy Martini would become one of the headline contenders for the world’s richest turf race.
