Zoustar’s dual Stakes winner, Schwarz, continued his rise with a G2 victory in Sydney last Saturday. Initially considered for the G1 Memsie Stakes on August 31, Schwarz’s next target could now be the G1 Manikato Stakes at The Valley next month. Co-trainer John O’Shea is taking a cautious approach after Schwarz’s tough run in the Missile Stakes, but heโs confident the colt will reach Group 1 level. “We’ll just take our time with him as he had a very hard run on Saturday,” O’Shea said.
Schwarz, purchased as a yearling for $1.25 million with stallion potential in mind, might have another run in Sydney before heading to Melbourne. O’Shea believes The Valley’s six furlongs suit Schwarzโs racing style, making the Manikato Stakes an appealing target.
Meanwhile, O’Shea’s quality three-year-old, Linebacker, is gearing up for the Caulfield Guineas and possibly the Cox Plate. “I always felt our bloke was six months away,” O’Shea noted, planning a big spring campaign.
Athabascan, O’Sheaโs Melbourne Cup prospect, is also making strides, preparing to challenge Circle Of Fire, with O’Shea optimistic about his chances. “He’s been chipping away and getting miles into his legs and I think he’s ready now,” O’Shea said.
With Schwarz aiming for Group 1 success, Linebacker eyeing major spring races, and Athabascan on the Melbourne Cup trail, O’Shea’s stable is set for an exciting season.
