Sam Kavanagh, a New South Wales-based horse trainer and the son of Melbourne Cup-winning trainer Mark Kavanagh, passed away on Saturday morning at the age of 38 after battling illness.
Despite early success, Kavanagh faced significant challenges in his career. In 2015, he received a lengthy ban from racing for cobalt and raceday offences, though the penalty was later reduced on appeal. Throughout his time in the industry, Kavanagh trained 95 winners, with his final runner, Sharpen The Knives, delivering a fitting farewell victory at Armidale last Sunday.
A statement from Sam Kavanagh Racing expressed deep sorrow at his passing, revealing that complications with his cancer led to his peaceful death after being admitted to the hospital the night before. The stable also extended their gratitude to the team who have ensured operations continued during this difficult period.
โIt is with great sadness that we have to let everyone know that Sam was taken into hospital last night after taking a turn for the worse,โ said a note from Sam Kavanagh Racing to their owners.
โUnfortunately, there were complications with his cancer, and he passed away peacefully this morning.
โWe are very grateful to the staff that are keeping the stable operating.โ
Kavanagh leaves behind his partner, Kelly, and their daughter, Sienna. His death has prompted an outpouring of tributes from the racing community, with many taking to social media to honour his contribution to the sport and offer condolences to his family.
