Trainer Ed Dunlop has confirmed Red Cadeaux is likely to spend his retirement at Living Legends in Melbourne.

The three-time Melbourne Cup runner-up is recovering from a career-ending leg injury at the Werribee Veterinary Clinic after he was pulled out of the race last Tuesday.

Dunlop, who has returned to England, said it would be some time before Red Cadeaux was well enough to be transferred to the retirement home.

“I spoke with my travelling head lad Robin Trevor-Jones this morning and he said he’s happy with Red Cadeaux and how he’s come through his surgery and he’s well on the mend,” Dunlop told the Racing Post.

“Obviously his rehabilitation is ongoing and it will be some time until he’s ready to be moved but he won’t be coming home.”

“We are in discussions to transfer him to Living Legends which is near Melbourne and where hopefully he will prove a popular attraction.”

Among the horses at Living Legends are Melbourne Cup winners Rogan Josh, Might And Power, Doriemus and Brew.

Red Cadeaux’s stablemate Trip To Paris, second in the Caulfield Cup and fourth in the Melbourne Cup, is on track to head straight from Australia to Japan.

Trip To Paris was stripped on his left hind leg during the Melbourne Cup but Dunlop said he had recovered well.

“Trip To Paris was back exercising this morning after being struck into and it could well be that he heads straight from Australia to Japan where he is entered in the Japan Cup on November 29,” Dunlop said.
