Glen Boss has ridden Sydney sprinter Rebel Dane to a close victory over Fontelina in the Group One Rupert Clarke Stakes at Caulfield.
The Gary Portelli-trained four-year-old worked hard over the final 100m of the 1400m race to just get the nod over Fontelina from the Anthony Cummings stable with Solzhenitsyn third as he was last year.

“It is a great relief,” Portelli said.
“The owners raced the mother with me. He was an ugly duckling and they couldn’t sell him so they gave him to me to train.”
It was the 86th Group One victory for Boss but there were none of the theatrics associated with some of his other wins with both Boss and Fontelina’s jockey Peter Robl unsure who had won.
“It was hectic out there and the horse did it tough,” Boss said.
“I have nothing but admiration for him. He had to dig deep.
