Racing Victoria is contemplating a revision of the rule that restricts international horses’ participation in spring feature races before the Melbourne Cup.
The current regulation limits internationals stationed at Werribee for the Spring Carnival to just one Australian race prior to the Melbourne Cup.
This rule came into focus following the Caulfield Cup, where runner-up West Wind Blows was unable to advance to the Melbourne Cup due to competing in the Turnbull Stakes as a lead-up race.
The situation with West Wind Blows, despite the horse’s team being aware of the rule, has prompted discussions about potential amendments.
Renowned trainer Willie Mullins lauded Racing Victoria’s protocols, saying, “I think you are doing a wonderful thing for racing; you are minding racing with the new veterinary hoops we have to jump through.”
Mullins further emphasised the global importance of Australia’s role in maintaining the integrity of horse racing.
Racing Victoria is expected to review these protocols soon, with a keen focus on enhancing the sport’s safety and fairness.
