Rockhampton trainer John Pointon has been suspended for six months after one of his horses showed traces of cobalt after a barrier trial.

A stewards inquiry was told a urine test taken from the Pointon-trained Raunchy Woman after a barrier trial at Rockhampton on October 27 showed cobalt above the threshold of 100 micrograms per litre.

Pointon pleaded not guilty to a charge of presenting a horse to trial with a prohibited substance.

Stewards adjourned the original inquiry in May to make further inquiries.

At the reconvened inquiry, Pointon provided additional evidence and submissions and further evidence was also taken from Dr Karen Caldwell, Acting Manager Veterinary Services for the Racing Science Centre.

After considering all the evidence and submissions, stewards found Pointon guilty of the charge.

He was suspended for six months to end on December 14,.

Pointon is expected to seek an internal review.

Also at Rockhampton, two stablehands have been stood down after testing positive to prohibited substances.

Stewards carried out no notice testing at Rockhampton’s Callaghan Park on Saturday and the stablehands allegedly tested positive to cannabis, methamphetamine and amphetamine.

They were both stood down until the outcome of secondary testing.
