Promising juvenile Neveu could be set for another Melbourne campaign after his determined victory in Saturday’s SA Sires’ Produce Stakes (1400m) at Morphettville Parks.
The Jon O’Connor-trained colt stepped up to 1400 metres for the first time and showed plenty of grit to outlast Sydney visitor Spain in a stirring finish to the Group 3 feature.
Neveu’s latest success continued his impressive juvenile season, with his only unplaced performance coming during a trip to Caulfield in June.
O’Connor said the son of Rich Enuff had earned another opportunity to head interstate, although his exact spring path is still to be determined.
“We’ve got a big opinion of him. I dare say he might find his way back to Melbourne at some stage,’’ O’Connor said of the Rich Enuff homebred.
The Adelaide trainer said the coming weeks would determine whether the colt targets the Victorian spring carnival.
“We’re getting close to the spring so I’ll have to have a real good think,’’ O’Connor added.
“I’d love to get him to Melbourne for the later part of the carnival. For what? I don’t know.
“The pinnacle would be the Caulfield Guineas, I think that would be a bridge too far and it’s going to come up a bit soon for us where we are at now.
“We’ll have to have a good look. He’s a horse you have to target races with, we’ve got next year’s Autumn Carnival here, lot to think about now.”
