Ciaron Maher and David Eustace, Victoria’s leading stable, have added another talented horse to their ranks with the acquisition of Earl Of Tyrone.
The five-year-old gelding, owned by Australian Bloodstock, was previously trained by William Haggas in the UK.
Earl Of Tyrone was one of the favourites for the Sydney Cup but suffered a tendon injury during quarantine, which forced him to miss the race.
According to Jamie Lovett from Australian Bloodstock, Earl Of Tyrone’s tendon injury was significant but not severe enough to completely rule out a return to racing.
The horse has been undergoing rehabilitation in Australia, and his progress has been encouraging.
Lovett stated that Earl Of Tyrone’s recovery is slightly ahead of schedule, and the stable is optimistic about his chances of competing in the Spring Carnival.
Earl Of Tyrone, a son of Australia, was purchased for 300,000 guineas (approximately A$575,000) at the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale.
He won his first start for his new connections at Kempton Park in February before his transfer to Australia.
Australian Bloodstock hopes that Earl Of Tyrone can be a strong contender in the major races, particularly the Caulfield Cup and the Melbourne Cup, given his quality and preference for firm track conditions.
Lovett mentioned that Australian Bloodstock has been keeping an eye on several European horses for potential purchases this season.
However, they are waiting to see these horses perform on firm ground before finalising any deals.
The timing of Earl Of Tyrone’s injury was unfortunate, as he had shown great form in the UK and seemed poised for success.
Nonetheless, Australian Bloodstock remains hopeful that he can make a successful comeback and be a strong contender in the late part of the spring or early autumn racing season.
