Once a very promising two-year-old, Outback Miss hasn’t had the best of luck through injury but returned from a 301 day layoff with a dominant victory over 1000m, scoring by 4-1/4 lengths as the $2.35 favourite ahead of Wondereach ($9.50) and Mafia ($15)
With the track downgraded to a heavy 8 and main market danger Storm The Ramparts scratched at the barriers, the Mick Price & Michael Kent Jnr trained four-year-old mare Outback Miss only had five rivals to beat and did so with ease under Tyler Schiller, who notched up a double on the card.
Assistant trainer Ben Elam was thrilled with the result and praised the ownership’s patience to bring the mare back for just her fifth career start.
“I’ve got to say a huge thank you to the ownership group. They’ve been very patient with her, and you know it’s easy to tell them that she’s going very well, but when they’ve had that long off, they’ve still got to come here and do it,” Elam said.
While stakes races were on the horizon as a juvenile after winning her first two starts in Victoria, including a three-length victory over Nadal on debut, the stable will be happy to take their time with the daughter of Rubick, who is unbeaten on rain affected going.
“She’s a filly with a lot of ability. Obviously, the main aim with any filly that you get your hands on from owners is to get some black type for them, that’s obviously the main goal with them,” Elam said.
“She’s been through a fair bit over the last eighteen months, but we’re just glad to have her back and I’m really proud of what she was able to do today and I hope the ownership group get a great thrill out of it.”
“The race thinned out, the more rain that came the more confident we got, she relishes it as you saw then… and prior to the jump, the second favourite came out so she got really skinny by the end of it, but she probably warranted that quote in the end.”
