Trainer Mitch Freedman is optimistic that the winner of the Australian Cup may not yet be seen, despite changes following Saturday’s All-Star Mile.
Freedman praised his charge, Attrition, after the Blamey Stakes runner-up’s strong performance, and hinted he might bypass next Saturday’s Group 2 Peter Young Stakes to go directly to the March 29 Australian Cup.
“He’s in great shape and continues to run well at a high level,” Freedman said. “We’ll be nominating him for the Peter Young but more likely he’ll go straight to the Australian Cup.”
Saturday’s All-Star Mile introduced new competition for the race, with Tom Kitten, Middle Earth, and Light Infantry Man all emerging as potential contenders.
Freedman also noted that Skybird, winner of the Black Caviar Lightning Stakes, is likely to miss the G1 William Reid Stakes due to a muscle injury but may return for the spring.
