Beiwacht announced himself as a major spring player with an outstanding performance to win the Group 1 Memsie Stakes at Caulfield, with jockey Nash Rawiller describing the victory as a “dream come true”.
The four-year-old entire produced a performance that suggested he has taken another significant step forward this preparation, leaving Rawiller particularly impressed by the way he put his rivals away in the straight.
Nash Rawiller (Beiwacht): “What a thrill. You know, I just pray all week that he’d come out and do something like that, but it’s like a dream come true when he has.”
Rawiller believes Beiwacht’s continued physical and mental development was evident in his dominant display.
“He’s always been a lovely colt and, you know, an entire as a four-year-old, but he just went to a new level today. There’s no doubt about that.
“He’s always had a good attitude, he’s always just had that raw, high cruising speed, he’s just matured and God, that was a special feeling the whole way up the straight. He just had them cold. It was exciting.”
Behind the winner, there were also encouraging performances from several high-profile spring contenders, including Mr Brightside, Jimmysstar, Tom Kitten and Treasurethe Moment.
Craig Williams (Mr Brightside): “I was thrilled. Credit to his training combination of Ben, JD and Will Hayes and all the team around him, and what a phenomenal horse, he’s an amazing horse, he’s now run second in this race again, and what I really liked about his performance today, I thought the last part of the straight was better than the first part of the home straight so I think he’s only going to improve off today’s run.”
Ethan Brown (Jimmysstar): “I’d be forgiving. I thought he found a nice enough spot after 300 metres, he travelled well throughout, but he just hated having that horse lay all over him throughout, struggled to quicken into gear after that, just trusting he’s going to come on from the run.”
Mark Zahra (Tom Kitten): “He ran super, just couldn’t get a cart into the race but he hit the line very nicely.”
Jye McNeil (Buckaroo): “Trademark stuff from Bucky first-up, he loves getting around Caulfield over 1400, to be only a few lengths away, I thought it was a great effort.”
