On the day leading NSW bush trainer Matty Dunn was asked whether he thought a permanent move to Rosehill would be on the cards soon, he comes out, flexes his muscles, and nearly trains the program.
At Murwillumbah on Thursday, Dunn had runners in all 6 races. He trains his huge team of horses at Murwillumbah.
There is a big maroon and white sign in the middle of the track that says simply Matt Dunn Racing. He is king there.
And didn’t he show it.
His horses won the first 5 races and he had the $2.05 TAB fav in the last.
After three races, on track announcer, Anthony Manton, said during the call, words that may live on in infamy: “That’s 3 now for Matt Dunn….and he’s not Dunn with yet.”
Which proved rather prophetic.
He won the next two and his horse in the last, a talented son of Tavistock having just its 2nd race start named HOGAN’S DARE, charged through underneath the others, on the slow part of the dampened track and went down by….a short half head.
Dunn is dominant up his way. He just gets his horses fitter than all his rivals.
He often wins the TAB Highway races also when he brings his charges to the city for that country-only race each Saturday.
And he is getting some flack because of that too, because he does rent a few boxes at Rosehill already, prompting rival bush trainers to ask: “is he still a country trainer if they are trained out of the city?”
Either way, his effort at his home track yesterday deserves tremendous applause.
His horses ran the quinella in two of the races also.
