Promising three-year-old Rebel Rock is an example of how bad luck can morph into good fortune.
Rebel Rock will make his Saturday metropolitan debut in the QTIS Three Year Old (1640m) at Doomben.
The colt has more than earned a crack at city class with a win and two seconds from three starts this campaign.
Trainers Peter and Will Hulbert picked Rebel Rock up for $14,000, and he has already returned nearly three times that amount.
“We took him to Warwick for his first start as it was a race with a QTIS bonus,” Hulbert said.
“It was a soft five track rating when we set off but there was a downpour before we got there and it ended up very heavy.
“We decided to run anyway and as luck would have if he got through the ground well. Luckily, we now know he can handle heavy tracks.”
At his next start Rebel Rock was second to promising Purroni at Doomben followed by another second at Eagle Farm.
“In the Eagle Farm run he charged the starting gate and hit his shoulder which meant instead of being up on the pace he was well back,” Hulbert said.
“But the bad luck turned into good luck because we have accidentally learned how best to ride him.
“Rebel Rock hit the line really well and I liked the way he finished off.
“There looks to be plenty of pace on Saturday and that should suit.”
Rebel Rock came through the Magic Millions March sales making him eligible for the $2 million Magic Millions Guineas but Hulbert is not yet looking that far ahead.
