Legless Veuve has become the first filly since Mosheen to win the Manfred Stakes

Legless Veuve has become the first filly since Mosheen to beat the males in the Manfred Stakes at Caulfield and will be out to emulate her again in the Australian Guineas.

The Stuart Webb-trained Legless Veuve was the only filly in Saturday’s Group Three Manfred Stakes (1200m) but showed she had returned in great order with her three-quarters of a length win.

Mosheen went on to claim the Group One Australian Guineas two starts after winning the Manfred in 2012 and that’s also the aim for Legless Veuve.

“I think the progression she has made from last preparation to this preparation has been outstanding,” Webb said.

“She’s really developed and I’ll probably just keep her to a light preparation this time in. I think she’s going to be one of the nicest four-year-old mares you’ll see.

“She’s such a beautiful horse to look at.”

In a race dominated by those near the speed, Legless Veuve ($18) sat outside leader Into Orbit ($7.50) before getting the better of him early in the straight.

Into Orbit took the runner-up placing with Caulfield Guineas placegetter Hey Doc ($4.60) another three-quarters of a length away.

Webb said Legless Veuve would have one more start over 1400m in two weeks before heading to the Australian Guineas (1600m) on March 4.

She could then head to Sydney but Webb said the filly was likely to be kept to four or five runs this campaign.

“She’s a lovely big filly and she could be a weight-for-age horse as a four and five-year-old,” he said.

Legless Veuve notched her third win from six starts which included her Group Two win in the Thousand Guineas Prelude last spring before finishing at the tail of the field in the Group One Thousand Guineas.
