Leading trainers in Melbourne have expressed their views on Racing Victoria’s trial of a 10th Saturday race, emphasising the need for a shorter race-day experience to ensure its success.
With the aim of boosting revenue amid a decline in wagering, Racing Victoria plans to add an extra race to Saturday metropolitan fixtures starting next month.
Trainer Pat Carey believes that while 10 races are feasible, it is crucial to reduce the overall race-day duration.
He suggests collaborating with Sky Channel, the national race clock setter, to synchronise race times between Victoria and New South Wales.
Mick Kent shares the sentiment, proposing 25-minute gaps between races.
However, concerns have been raised regarding track management during colder, wetter months.
Some trainers, such as Greg Eurell, are sceptical about the trial and prefer to maintain the current race schedule.
