Tulloch Lodge imports Sir Delius and Vauban, who currently share favouritism for the Melbourne Cup, have signalled their spring readiness with strong trial victories at Hawkesbury.
The pair were among a large group of high-profile runners to step out after last week’s weather disruptions forced the metropolitan trial program to be reshuffled. Contesting separate 1250m heats under Tim Clark, both stayers impressed as they build towards resuming in the Chelmsford Stakes at Randwick on September 3.
Sir Delius made an immediate impact in Australia with his debut Group 3 victory at Doomben during the Brisbane winter carnival, while Vauban is set for his fourth local campaign start since being retained by new owners following last year’s Melbourne Cup.
Bookmakers currently have the pair marked $11 equal favourites for the Cup, alongside the Joseph O’Brien-trained Al Riffa and recent Winx Stakes winner Via Sistina.
Also at Hawkesbury, Golden Slipper heroine Marhoona produced a smart 800m trial win against older rivals. Trainer Michael Freedman confirmed she is likely to resume in early September, with the Group 1 Moir Stakes at Moonee Valley among her possible kick-off options.
Punters can follow Sir Delius, Vauban and Marhoona into the spring, with futures markets available now via Australia’s leading betting sites.
