Japanese stayer Stinger Glass to target the Melbourne Cup

Japanese stayer Stinger Glass is on course for a shot at this year’s Melbourne Cup, with trainer Yasuo Tomomichi planning to have the talented entire peak for Australia’s greatest staying race.

Tomomichi has not been discouraged by the five-year-old’s latest performance, where he finished unplaced in the Grade 1 Takarazuka Kinen over 2200 metres at Hanshin.

That run came after Stinger Glass claimed the Grade 3 Diamond Stakes over 3400 metres at Tokyo in June, further showcasing his staying credentials.

The son of Kizuna has won from distances ranging between 2000 and 3400 metres and is set to tackle the Melbourne Cup first-up this spring.

Preparations are already underway, with Stinger Glass scheduled to complete quarantine at Northern Farm in Japan before travelling to Melbourne ahead of the spring carnival.

Owned by M’s Racing, the stallion has recorded six victories from his 12 career starts.

If successful at Flemington, Stinger Glass would become just the second Japanese-trained winner of the Melbourne Cup, following Delta Blues’ historic triumph in 2006.
