Queensland star Antino has been retired after pulling up from his return to racing in Queensland last Saturday with an issue.
In his first start in his home state since his four-length track-record romp in last year’s Group 1 Doomben Cup, the seven-year-old laboured into fourth position – beaten 2-1/2 lengths by $91 shot Kronenbourg – in the Listed Brisbane Handicap (1600m).
The Tony Gollan-trained gelding was found to have heat and swelling in his right fore tendon on Sunday, which was later revealed to be an even more serious issue.
“Further veterinary examinations this morning confirmed sustained that injury during the race,” Gollan said in a statement on social media late on Monday afternoon.
“After consultation with the ownership group, the decision was made to retire Antino from racing.
“It is with tremendous sadness we have had to make this decision, given the thrills and excitement he has provided the racing industry, from fans to our staff and owners.
“Antino will enjoy a well-earned retirement after his rehabilitation from injury.”
The son of Redwood retires a winner of 13 races, from 33 starts, which also generated seven minor placings and $3,465,065 in stakes.
Last year’s four-length Doomben Cup win, which came in a time of 2:00.88, was the second at the highest level for the NZ$27,000 purchase, who also won the 2024 Toorak Handicap (1600m) by 6-1/2 lengths.
