Ballarat trainer Henry Dwyer has taken a major step towards establishing an international racing operation after being granted a United Kingdom trainer’s licence.
The licence will allow Dwyer to operate across both hemispheres, with plans to maintain a seasonal base in Britain during the northern summer before returning horses to Australia to continue their racing careers.
Dwyer said the initiative was a natural progression following the success and enjoyment of the stable’s recent European campaigns.
“We’ve thoroughly enjoyed competing at all the major festivals the past two years, an experience we want to share with all our Australian owners,” Dwyer said.
“We plan to purchase and have in work four to six horses each summer in the UK, before repatriating them to Ballarat to continue their careers.”
The announcement comes as Dwyer prepares for another strong assault on Royal Ascot, where the stable is expected to have three representatives.
Star sprinter Asfoora is set to defend her crown in the Group 1 King Charles III Stakes on Tuesday, while Synners Kid is entered for Thursday’s Britannia Stakes.
Kochella is also scheduled to represent the stable in Friday’s Group 3 Albany Stakes.
Dwyer said he hopes the stable can continue to expand its footprint in Europe in the years ahead.
“We’ll likely have three runners at Royal Ascot next week, something we’d love to build on each year,” he said.
The new licence provides Dwyer with greater flexibility to source, train and campaign horses internationally while continuing to operate his successful Ballarat stable.
