Kerrin McEvoy faced heavy criticism on social media following his third-place finishes on Via Sistina and Joliestar in their respective races.
Via Sistina, the $2.10 betting sites favourite in the Apollo Stakes, was overtaken by Fangirl, who produced a spectacular final burst of speed.
Meanwhile, Joliestar, the $2.05 favourite in the Expressway Stakes, struggled after being forced into a wide position in a small field, finishing just behind Magic Time.
Glen Boss, speaking to Racenet, defended McEvoy’s ride on Via Sistina, explaining that “Fangirl has the most superior turn of foot of any horse in Australia.” He also highlighted that McEvoy’s ride on Joliestar was impacted by the slow early pace, adding, “If he ends up in the one-one, everyone says what a great ride.”
Malcolm Johnston, also speaking to Racenet, suggested McEvoy was a “victim of circumstances,” noting that the early stages of the Apollo Stakes had put McEvoy in a difficult position.
McEvoy will have another opportunity to prove himself at Rosehill Gardens this Saturday with a strong line-up of rides.
