Unbeaten three-year-old filly toys with opposition in summer switch feature at Eagle Farm

Traditionally run in June as a lead-up to the wintertime Group 1 Queensland Derby, bringing forward the Group 3 Grand Prix Stakes (2100m) by six months to December has suited trainer David Vandyke to springboard Gypsy Goddess towards the fillies version, the Group 1 Queensland Oaks over 2400 metres.

Ridden by Stephanie Thornton, victory in the $250,000 feature saw the daughter of Tarzino extend her perfect record to four wins.

“Gee I was confident turning for home,” Vandyke said.

“She hadn’t moved on her,” he added of the ride which saw Gypsy Goddess ($1.24 favourite) settle near last until Thornton peeled out at the 500 metre mark to loop the other six runners.

Gypsy Goddess scored by 3-¼ lengths over Balmaurice ($19) and Ironic Miss ($20).

“She’s a stayer which is what I love.

“The way Steph got into a rhythm there and when she produced her she had so much left.

“Where does she stand I’m not sure but she’s got Oaks written all over her, doesn’t she?”

Vandyke is yet to decide when Gypsy Goddess may be seen next at the races.

“We’ll just keep an eye on her and I won’t let her go far from home.

“We’ll see how she is mentally and physically and decide whether she goes to Sydney for the Australian Oaks (2400m) or whether we wait to see if we turn up in the Queensland Oaks.”

This win broke new ground for the dual Group 1-winning trainer.

“It is quite amazing because I’ve never had a horse win a group race in its first preparation.

“Before her maiden win she wouldn’t beat a horse on the track and she’s now said ‘I can do this’.

“She’s climbed the ladder that quickly and she’s just beautiful.”
