Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott are considering the prospect of securing their first Adelaide Cup victory with the promising stayer Yarrawonga, who remains a strong contender to participate in the prestigious event at Morphettville next Monday.
Yarrawonga, an imported son of Australia, has demonstrated remarkable improvement, securing three victories in his last four starts. His most recent triumph was a commanding win in a Benchmark 78 handicap over 2400m at Rosehill.
Adrian Bott expressed confidence in Yarrawonga’s abilities, highlighting the Group 2 handicap over 3200m as a suitable opportunity to elevate the six-year-old’s performance to a new level.
“It’s highly likely that he’ll run,” Bott affirmed. “He’s showing positive progress and continues to build his confidence as he progresses through his grades.”
Bott further emphasized Yarrawonga’s stamina and peak condition, suggesting that the horse possesses the endurance necessary for a marathon race like the Adelaide Cup.
“Yarrawonga has the ability to stay all day, and he’s currently at the peak of his form,” Bott added.
Gai Waterhouse’s illustrious racing pedigree includes her father, T.J. Smith, who secured victory in the Adelaide Cup in 1981 with Just A Dash, a triumph that ultimately paved the way for Melbourne Cup success.
