Trainer Toby Edmonds is looking to sprinter From Within to stamp her winter carnival credentials when she runs at Eagle Farm.
From Within, winner of the Listed Alinghi Stakes at Caulfield during the spring but well beaten in the Group One Oakleigh Plate in February, runs in Saturday’s Open Handicap (1000m).
After the Oakleigh Plate, Edmonds brought her back to Brisbane where she was second to veteran Straturbo in an Eagle Farm open handicap on March 23.
In that race, as has been her general racing pattern, From Within led but Edmonds is keen to get her to settle and get cover.
“Jeff (Lloyd) is back on her and he has won on her twice. I have also taken the ear muffs off her,” Edmonds said.
“She has never missed a place at 1000 metres and the only worry is barrier 12.”
From Within has won four races and been minor placed three times since being sent north from Sydney in August.
“There should be some good short course races for her in the winter,” Edmonds said.
Edmonds will have a big weekend with his Brisbane runners and Winter Bride and Millard Reaction at Randwick.
Winter Bride runs in the Group Two Sapphire Stakes (1200m) while Millard Reaction steps out in the Listed Southern Cross Stakes (1400m).
Edmonds’ son Trent is in England with top mare Houtzen and reports she is settling in well as she prepares for the King’s Stand Stakes on June 18.
“Word has it they are both doing well although Houtzen is losing a bit of weight and Trent is putting it on,’ Edmonds said.
Saturday’s open handicap at Eagle Farm features a classy field of sprinters but Caloundra trainer Stuart Kendrick is not afraid to take them on with Hingus Rose although he would like some rain.
Hingus Rose is one of several consistent mares Kendrick trains by the 2009 Oakleigh Plate winner Swiss Ace.
“The things you can say about his offspring are they handle all types of tracks and they are very honest,” Kendrick said.
Hingus Rose certainly lives up to that having won seven of her 25 starts and finishing worse than fifth only four times in her career.
“Four of her wins have been on wet tracks and a bit of rain might help against this field,” Kendrick said.
“But she has come back well and we trialled her on Tuesday where she wasn’t asked to do much.”
Kendrick has elected to take the pre-race ear muffs off Hingus Rose for Saturday.
