Written Swoosh makes her second racecourse appearance for Phillip Stokes on Saturday

Immaturity cost Written Swoosh being an autumn player with her trainer Phillip Stokes hoping the filly may prove up to spring company.

Phillip Stokes erred on the side of caution after a promising debut by Written Swoosh with a view to the filly being a spring contender.

After finishing second in the Group 3 Blue Diamond Preview (1000m) at Caulfield back in January at her debut, Stokes immediately tipped her out for a break.

Written Swoosh makes her second racecourse appearance on Saturday when she heads to The Valley to run in the Ladbrokes Mates Mode Handicap (955m).

“It was tempting to go on, but I’ve been there and done that before and it hasn’t always worked,” Stokes said.

“She got her Black Type with that first effort, so we gave her the time.”

Stokes said the time in the paddock and a slow build-up for the racetrack return for Written Swoosh had been beneficial for the filly.

He said immaturity told against Written Swoosh in her initial campaign while the trainer had noted a different filly this time around.

The Group 3 Quezette Stakes (1100m) at Caulfield on August 13 could be an early spring target for Written Swoosh before Stokes sits down to map out a program later into her campaign.

“She’s had two trials to get her ready for this,” Stokes said.

“We thought we’d get her up and going early and if she happens to win or run well on Saturday then there is the Quezette in a couple of weeks’ time.

“She was immature last time in, so we stopped on her and gave her that time which I think it was the right thing to do.

“I think the 955 metres will be good as they’ll run along, and she can be strong at the end.

“I’m not sure where her distance lies at this stage, but she’s probably a sprinting type at this stage.”
