Toby Edmonds says that the best of Fire Bomber is still to come but that does not mean the gelding cannot strike again at Ipswich on Friday.
At his eighth career start, Fire Bomber takes on the $28,000 TAB QTIS 3&4yo Benchmark 68 Handicap (1350m) in search of his third career win along with two placings with 60-kilos on his back which is not concerning his trainer.
“I think he can overcome it,” Edmonds said.
“He’s a big, strong Better Than Ready gelding so I don’t think he’ll have much trouble with the weight.
“He’s going very well and his runs have been terrific.”
Beaten by a combined margin of less than a length at his past two outings at Doomben, Fire Bomber heads back to the scene of both of his race wins.
“Back a tad in grade is good but the QTIS money is what we are chasing,” Edmonds added.
“He’s a progressive horse and should get through his grades pretty quickly, maybe next prep.”
Edmonds holds just short of a 21% winning strike-rate at Ipswich and 52.8% place-rate across nearly 290 runners through his training career outside of his partnership with son Trent.
In other stable news, Group 1 Stradbroke Handicap (1400m) winner Spicy Martini has returned to Edmonds’ Gold Coast stable and had her first fast gallop on Saturday morning towards the dream of gaining a slot in Group 1 The Everest (1200m) in October.
Spicy Martini’s race day comeback is slated for the Group 2 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick on September 5.
