Paddy Payne, father of Melbourne Cup-winning jockey Michelle, didn’t see victory coming.
Payne, who raised Michelle and her nine siblings on his own, said he was thrilled albeit surprised that she was the first woman to win the nation’s biggest horse race on Tuesday.
“I thought that the girls would win a Melbourne Cup as time went on but I didn’t think it would be one of mine,” he told ABC radio on Wednesday.
