Talented filly City Of Song gets the chance to put two unlucky runs behind her when she contests Saturday’s Blue Sapphire Stakes at Caulfield.

The two-year-old, by Black Caviar’s sire Bel Esprit, made an impressive debut over 1000m at Sandown when she came from ninth on settling to score comfortably with Brenton Avdulla in the saddle on March 2.

However she was denied clear running over the last 200m when third to subsequent Golden Slipper runner-up Mosheen over 1000m at Caulfield when handled by Jason Benbow on March 19.

At her latest outing with leading apprentice Jake Noonan aboard, City Of Song had a checkered passage from the 400m before finishing third to Cash Bound over 1000m at Moonee Valley on April 2.

“She’s had a bit of a freshen-up between runs because the plan was to run her in this race,” Caulfield trainer John Moloney said.

“It’s a Listed race and there are no penalties on her behalf so we’ll see how we go. It all reads okay.

“It is what it is, she’s had no luck at her last couple but you still have to overcome bad luck sometimes and she never did.

“She wasn’t good enough to overcome the bad luck. Some horses can be that way, but she needs to now find some luck and see how (good) she is.

“It would be nice to put that behind her by doing something on Saturday. That will tell us.

“She was impressive at her first run so we’ll just have to play on that and hope that she can come through and go on with it.”

City Of Song’s owner Colin Beggs who races the filly with his family, bred her out of Songs Of Vienna who, prepared by Moloney, won four races including the 2005 VRC Listed Straight Six and was also runner-up at Group Three level at Flemington.

Benbow has been booked to ride City Of Song who goes to the paddock with the spring in mind after Saturday.

The filly will carry 54kg, three kilograms less than the topweight, the Peter Moody-trained Highly Recommended, who has a one-kilo penalty under the set weights plus penalties conditions for his win over 1000m at Flemington at his only appearance on April 16.
