There looks to be zero speed here to my eye. I think Angel Of Truth leads. Whether Mount Popa slides across with him, not sure. Maximal can hold a forward spot from gate one and potentially Verry Elleegant and Colette can settle closer. Think It Over won’t be far away.
2022 Chipping Norton Stakes Runner Preview
1. Think It Over: Johnny on the spot in the Apollo and duly bolted up. If this track becomes bottomless heavy, I think he’ll ease right out in betting and under $4 at the time of writing, I think he’s a clear risk on a potentially bottomless track.
2. Kolding: Not too bad fresh in the Apollo and subsequent trial was solid, but on a heavy track, he’s going to well and truly struggle. Happy to look elsewhere.
3. Top Ranked: I find him a fascinating runner. Quality animal that resumes with potentially an eye towards earning an All Star Mile wildcard. Did a good job last prep in The Hunter before being spelled. Trials and work between races suggest he’s come back super. A threat for sure.
4. Mount Popa: This time last year he was the most progressive horse in Australia. The Spring prep washed all that away. He was terrible, so rather just watch.
5. Angel Of Truth: He looks the speed in the race and can sprint well fresh. But I do feel his better days are behind him so happy to let him go around with me.
6. Stockman: He is one of the better swimmers going around but given his GF this prep is the Sydney Cup, I think he’ll struggle to be a winning threat, but he’ll be good late.
7. Maximal: IMO, he needs to be gelded, but given his breeding, that won’t happen. Talent is there, clearly, but he wanted to get it over and done with in the Apollo.
8. Verry Elleegant: If the forecast is right, then we’ll see not only just top class horse racing, we might even see Noah and his Ark. With the forecast, I am keen on this champion mare. Race shape was too sharp for her fresh in the Apollo and she did more than enough. She gets her conditions to suit, she’s fitter, she can sit closer in the run…all points to her.
9. Colette: Colette looks to be flying. Trialled well and confirmed that in the Apollo when working home strongly from off the speed to finish second to the beauty that is Think It Over. She, like Verry Elleegant, gets conditions to suit, and if the inside gate is used to advantage, she’ll only run well.
10. Montefilia: Classy mare who loves getting her toe in and David Payne is glowing about how well she has come back. She is a capable horse on the fresh side so I think she’s here to run a positive race.
11. Hungry Heart: I’d love to see her go towards the Australian Cup. Did enough in the Apollo but a genuine wet track seals her fate as a winning threat.
12: She’s Ideel: Great wet tracker who was warming to the task late in the Apollo. Fitter, up yo the mile, she’s one I could entertain for a first four spot.
13. Duais: Not sure about her on a genuine wet track but loved the way she found the line fresh in the Apollo. Definite pass mark for a first up run from a stayer and I think she’s a definite first four threat.

Keeping it simple. $50 Win on both Verry Elleegant and Colette. Two best wet trackers in the race and both will improve big time from the Apollo.
