New Zealand’s champion jockey Opie Bosson is set to make a return to racing, ending a brief retirement with plans to resume riding from the start of the new season.
The 99-time Group 1-winning rider retired in December, but his comeback had been speculated for months, especially as he continued assisting trainers Mark Walker and Sam Bergerson at Matamata and remained involved at Te Akau Stud during his time off.
Bosson will officially reunite with powerhouse stable Te Akau Racing upon his return.
“It has been at the back of my mind for a little while now. I have still been riding track work, and there are a lot of nice horses coming through,” Bosson said.
“I didn’t really lose a lot of fitness, and I have got the hunger back again that I lost. I decided about eight weeks ago that I wanted to come back, so I have been training hard.”
The return will also see Bosson work with a new agent, with former jockey Michael Coleman taking over his bookings, replacing long-time manager Aidan Rodley.
