Carl Spackler will race once more in the UK before heading to Australia
Yulong Investment’s newest American recruit Carl Spackler is being set for the Cox Plate as his spring grand final.
The high-class miler, now trained by Ciaron Maher, made his stable debut with a sixth-place finish in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot.
Maher’s national assistant Jack Turnbull said the Cox Plate was firmly in their sights.
“The Cox Plate was voiced as it’s our premier race. We know he’s effective at a mile with three Grade 1 wins, but his grand final is probably going to be the Cox Plate,” Turnbull said.
Maher was pleased with the Ascot run despite the horse travelling keenly early.
“Ciaron was pleased with what he saw. He was solid. He travelled a bit strong for the first 200 to 300 metres,” Turnbull added.
Carl Spackler will race once more in the UK before heading to Australia, with the exact route yet to be confirmed.
Yulong won last year’s Cox Plate with their mare Via Sistina.
