A Stakes race at Caulfield is on the radar for impressive debut winner Buggsy.

Trainers Mick Price and Michael Kent Jnr have gone about teaching Buggsy how to be a more relaxed racehorse ahead of his assignment at Caulfield.

The son of Harry Angel registered an imposing 1000m victory at Sandown on debut last month and heads to the Listed Redoute’s Choice Stakes (1200m) on Saturday for start number two.

With a month between runs, the Cranbourne based trainers have worked hard on teaching Buggsy on being more tractable.

Buggsy raced on the speed before showing a good turn of foot on his debut win at Sandown and now Price and Kent Jnr want to see the colt stretch out to 1200m.

Kent Jnr said the debut victory was that of a promising horse, but one that was still quite green.

He described Buggsy as a high energy colt that was now starting to get into the groove of knowing what to do on the track and which he hopes will translate to the racetrack.

“He looked like a sitting duck at the top of the straight (on debut) and what we found was that he was as strong as anything past the line,” Kent Jnr said.

“I think he’ll really enjoy the tempo of 1200 metres as he’ll be able to travel a bit longer.

“He’s had a four-and-a-half-week gap, so we’ve given him a couple of gallops sitting off a mate where he has leant to be a bit more tractable.

“He’s also had a couple of longer gallops where he has got into the groove of finding his rhythm and finishing off his gallop.

“We’re really happy with him and I think he’ll give a great sight.”

Thomas Stockdale takes over on Buggsy after Craig Williams partnered the colt on debut.

Buggsy was a $300,000 purchase from the Inglis Ready To Run Sale last October and can continue the success the stable has enjoyed this season with their two-year-olds including Guest House in the Group 1 Golden Slipper at Rosehill last month.
