Promising sprinter Benedetta’s spring aspirations have been abruptly halted following a mishap upon her return to Melbourne. After securing fourth place in the Silver Eagle, the mare was being primed by trainer Jason Warren for the Furphy Sprint on Derby Day.
Unfortunately, upon disembarking the truck, Benedetta managed to dislodge a shoe, stepping on a nail in the process. This resulted in damage to her hoof wall. “She needs a break for that to grow out,” remarked a disappointed Warren. He further mentioned that the mare, notorious for her “thin, dainty feet,” had her protective bell boots come off during transit.
Benedetta, a winner in six of her 10 races, notched a Group 3 win and G2 placement this season prior to her Silver Eagle run. Reflecting on her growth, Warren said, “She’s now travelled interstate and will be more seasoned next time.” Looking ahead, he sees potential in the Oakleigh Plate during the autumn season.
For now, the Hellbent progeny will embark on a recuperative 6-8 week hiatus.
