Despite bypassing a $10 million feature with Angel Capital last week, champion trainer Chris Waller is satisfied he has waited for Saturday’s Group 1 Orr Stakes (1400m) at Caulfield.

Now racing as an entire for new owners Yulong, Angel Capital had the option of chasing the lucrative winner’s cheque in the Golden Eagle, but a Group 1 Orr triumph would significantly enhance his stallion credentials.

“He doesn’t like the wet too much,” Waller said. “Obviously, I was reluctant to miss the Golden Eagle, but I’m pleased I did because he likes a good track.

“So, he’s back down here and we gave him a nice quiet trial last week and he’s ready to go. It’s an important race for him.”

Any disappointment in skipping the $10 million Golden Eagle was softened when unbeaten mare Autumn Glow swept to victory at Randwick on a Soft 7, continuing Waller’s domination of the rich western Sydney feature.

Angel Capital has quickly stamped himself as top-class since joining Waller’s stable following his sale to Yulong, running a slashing sixth in the $20 million The Everest (1200m) at just his third start for the yard.

“His run in The Everest was nothing short of brilliant,” Waller said. “They just didn’t go quick enough for him, but he ran the fastest final 400 metres.”

Bookmakers have Angel Capital installed as the $2.50 favourite for the Orr Stakes, just ahead of in-form star Jimmysstar at $2.80, and Waller is under no illusions about the danger posed by the dual Group 1 winner.

“I’d prefer if he wasn’t there,” Waller said. “He’s got the points on the board, and we are trying to get some points. It should be a great race,” he said.
