It was a win for the bookies but the finish on Tsarevich in the fifth race at Kembla Grange on Wednesday has to be seen to be believed.
The three-year-old son of Cox Plate placegetter Russian Camelot was all but beaten until the 150m mark where he made up an almost impossible gap to run down race favourite Cosmic Avenger on the line.
Tsarevich made an unremarkable debut last September when sixth at Hawkesbury over 1400m and was not fancied by punters to do much better on his return.
With two recent unplaced trials and Molly Bourke to ride, Tsarevich went off at 30-1 with bookmakers for the 1300m maiden and after ambling out of the gates to settle last it appeared punters were correct in their assessment.
