Punters have erupted in anger and are demanding refunds after jockey Eliseo Ruiz was accused of deliberately preventing his mount Bailout Billy from winning Race 7 at Parx in Philadelphia on Wednesday morning.
Social media quickly lit up in the aftermath of the race, with many labelling the ride “unacceptable” and questioning the tactics employed in the closing stages.
Backed with confidence in betting, Bailout Billy travelled strongly into the straight and appeared poised to challenge, however Ruiz did not fully pressure the horse over the concluding stages, with the gelding going to the line largely untested and ultimately beaten a narrow margin.
The lack of urgency from the saddle has drawn widespread criticism, with punters venting frustration over what they perceived to be a winning opportunity missed.
Many took to social platforms demanding explanations, while others called for stewards to review the ride, suggesting the handling of the horse did not reflect the expectations of a runner that had been heavily supported in the market.
With the margin at the finish just a neck, the controversy has only intensified, leaving punters convinced the outcome could have been very different under stronger riding.
It is expected stewards will review the ride in the coming days as pressure mounts for clarity around the tactics used in the race.
