Excuses for jockeys don’t get much weirder than that of Blake Spriggs at Newcastle on Saturday in which a bird interfered with his riding in the home straight.
Blake Spriggs who was aboard Aperol Sprint in the second race on Saturday’s Newcastle card was interfered with in the straight after a bird who was on the track flew into the jockey early in the straight causing him to have to regain his composure and ride the horse out to a credible second behind the odds on favourite True Marvel.
The bird probably did not cause the horse to lose the race but you will be hard pressed to see a weirder excuse for a jockey today.
