Cult horse and crowd-favorite Tom Melbourne has placed 2nd a total of 9 times in 27 career starts, amazingly 4 consecutive times towards the end of 2017. In fitting style, the 7-year-old gelding again finished 2nd in his most recent start, holding in tact his impressive 1 in 3 strike rate of being the first loser.
It seems the equivalent of the people’s horse has been unearthed in the jockey world however, as Victorian Jarrod Fry has discovered an uncanny knack of finishing in second place, in fact filling the runner up position double the amount of times he has won in season 2017/18.
28-year-old Fry currently sits in 41st position in the Jockey’s Premiership for all of Victoria with 27 wins for the season, finshing second a whopping 54 times. Though only winning at 7% for the season, Jarrod Fry is currently filling the minors almost 40% of the time, helped along by his ability to get very close to the winner.
Unluckily for the one of the best country jockeys in the state, had he turned 33 of his 54 second placings into winners he would have edged his way into the top 5 state-wide, or 29 to be in the top 10.
The serial place-getter has 6 rides at Donald tomorrow with tactical punters licking their lips at the Jarrod Fry ridden chances. A talented jockey nonetheless, Fry has had 587 career winners, ironically surpassed by finshing runner up 639 times since his first ride in 2007.
