So who is Australia’s Champion 2YO?
With pretty much just the Brisbane Winter Carnival left of the juvenile season, one must emerge as the Champion, and alongside of it, the Champion Male and Champion Female.
And unless someone jumps out of the woodwork and lands a couple of Gr 1s while in the sunshine state during winter, which would add another layer of complexity to the question, there seems at present no clear cut favourite to win the crown….or crowns.
So here’s an exercise in mathematical argument to find the Champs.
Let’s make a scale of points up.
Maybe make the Gr 1 races worth 10 points to a winner; 6 points for 2nd and 4 points for 3rd.
A Gr 2 race is worth 8 points to the winner, 5 points for 2nd and 3 points for 3rd.
A Gr 3 race is worth 6 points to the winner, 4 points for 2nd and 2 points for 3rd.
All stakes races outside of Group races are worth a 3 – 2 – 1 on the scale of points.
If we apply that formula to the races thus far, this is how our current, open bunch of outstanding babies look.
MICROPHONE (Exceed and Excel-Sung) is on 29 points.
LYRE (Lonhro-Erato) is on 22 points
KIAMICHI (Sidestep-Ouachita) is on 20 points
LYRE (Lonhro-Erato) is on 22 points
CASTELVECCHIO (Dundeel-St.Therese) is on 20 points
LOVING GABY (I Am Invincible-Maastricht) is on 18 points
EXHILARATES (Snitzel-Samaready) is on 10 points
So based on that, at the moment and keep in mind there are two (2) Gr 1 races still to come in Queensland, then Champion Male would be Microphone. Champion Filly would by Lyre and overall Champion would be Microphone.
Notice how ALL of those Champions are owned by Godolphin.
Naturally there are other scales of justice to apply if looking for the Champions. Prizemoney being one.
If that is the sole criteria then this is how it looks.
Kiamichi $2,324,350
Castelvecchio $1,608,000
Microphone $1,588,600
Lyre $1,381,400
Exhilarates $1,370,150
That would make Champion Male Castelvecchio, Champion Filly Kiamichi with Kiamichi crowned Champion overall.
Fascinating, and completely different.
