Marhoona won a thrilling edition of the Golden Slipper (1200m) at Rosehill on Saturday, just beating Wodeton in a close finish with Tempted not far away in third in what was a thrilling edition of the $5m race.
Down below is how we’ve rated each runner and their performance.
Marhoona (1st) – 9: Got the beaut run in transit and once she got clear, she finished best to get there, just. But she looks a very good filly heading in the right direction.
Wodeton (2nd) – 8.5: Another stride and he’s worth $30 Million. The great game. I got him wrong, he ran much better than what I thought he would. He’s a good colt, I think, but want to see him put a race away before putting him on the top shelf.
Tempted (3rd) – 8.5: She is one of a couple that you can say was unlucky not to win. Just got badly held up at the wrong stage when wanting clear air, driving hard late. She’s a very good filly to follow I suspect.
Rivellino (4th) – 8: A clean jump and he wins. Awful start but gee I liked the way he closed his race off in defeat. Would love to see him head to the Sires, because I think he’d be a clear favourite if they went there. Super effort in defeat.
Devil Night (5th) – 8.5: I thought he was one of the better runs of the race given
North England (6th) – 7: He looked the winner 400m out when he presented but just couldn’t quite finish it off. I think he’s a nice horse but the prep was injury plagued.
Skyhook (7th) – 6.5: He got the right run in transit and was there to win but just couldn’t quite finish his race. Perhaps didn’t handle the seven day back up? Maybe wait for another day.
Bellazaine (8th) – 6: She stuck on really well in defeat given the early work she did in the run. Not sure if they press on with her but if they went to the Percy Sykes, I think she’d be more than competitive.
Military Tycoon (9th) – 5.5: Unconventional set up but she was a pass mark. Got a really good run in transit and was there to win but just couldn’t quite see it through. I reckon she will head to the Percy Sykes and give it a shake.
Tycoon Star (10th) – 4: End of prep run for mine. Had the right run in transit and was presented clear air to let down but was just plain late in the piece. He’s a good colt and can be followed for the Spring.
Beiwacht (11th) – 4: Had a decent early run but as soon as you had that thought, he was wide and doing work. That’s two gutbusters in a row so the spelling paddock is in order I dare say.
King Of Pop (12th) – 5: Think he’s a really nice horse but just too soon for him I think. He got back, wide and just couldn’t get involved.
West Of Swindon (13th) – 3: Setback last week and for mine, this was too much too soon for him. Not sure what talent is there under the hood but I’d want to see him again with a proper set up before binning him.
Quietly Arrogant (14th) – 1: Gee he was plain I thought after getting a good run in transit. Back to the drawing board for him.
Farcited (15th) – 2: Did too much work to lead and was one of the first beaten. Save for another day.
Within The Law (16th) – 0: Went through the rail so inconclusive.
